Should I learn piano or electric bass?
Question:
I've been playing the violin for about 9 years now, and I played piano for about a year when I was really young, so I know where the notes are and stuff (but I'm only proficient at reading treble cleft). Electric bass seems easier to learn with tabs than playing multiple chords on the piano. Which one should I choose to do?
Answer:
Personally, I've chosen to stick with piano and bass after trying other musical instruments like guitar, drum machines and programming consoles, organ, percussive instruments. I chose those two because I enjoy playing them more than any other reasons, like demand for musicians playing a certain instrument, that my 'idol' plays a certain instrument, that it's more affordable to buy certain equipments (lower maintenance cost, convenient transportation), that is it much easier to play than other instruments, etc.
If you're interested and curious to try a new musical instrument, try it out for a while, learn the instrument, play it to music you like, have jam sessions with friends, anything that can really make you decide whether or not it'll be an instrument that you'll like.
From experience, it is far too subjective to make any comparisons between playing difficulty level of either instruments. The reason being, each instrument requires very different skills, techniques, musical approach, etc. There is a whole lot more to playing music than just multiple chords on piano and reading bass tabs.
A lot of people have this misconception that the electric bass is very easy to play, some even say easier than the guitar. The truth is, mastering the electric bass is just as difficult as mastering the piano or any other instrument. Just because it has only four strings (two strings less than the standard electric guitar), doesn't mean it's easier than any other string instruments. Also, almost all musical instruments are very easy to learn but very difficult to master.
The art and science of playing the piano is much, much older than the electric bass (the difference of at least 200 years). This only means that there may be a whole lot more to playing the electric bass than what we know today.
Reading bass clef isn't very difficult. In fact, it will be a great thing for you to learn how to read notes from the bass clef staff. You should work to be an all rounded musician.
You should try both. Pick the one you enjoy playing more (or both).
