Are footswitches compatible with all amps?

I have a Marshall MG Series amplifier. I'm looking to get a footswitch, most likely a Marshall brand as well. But I am wondering, can all footswitches work on ANY amp, as long as it has channels? Or will it only work on the type of amp it's made for.
If it can't be used on any amp, is there any brand of footswitch that will work on any amp?
For those of you who don't know what a footswitch is, it's the step panel or button panel that you use to change the sounds on your amps without having to walk to the amp and manually change them.
