What's a good vintage-sounding distortion pedal?
Question:
I'm not talking about wailing metal distortion, I'm asking about more of a fuzz pedal. I absolutely love the sound of the Big Muff Pi, but it's really basic and I was wondering if there's anything more versatile/more tonal options?
Cheaper would definitely be better. I'm looking for something under $100.
Answer:
The Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz is very versatile, and I found one at Guitar Center for less than 40$. There are a few basic mods one can do to it to change the basic tone as well, too. I'm not huge on the fuzz pedal thing, but I loved the way it sounded - lots of harmonic content, that type of thing. This would be my suggestion to you - it seems to fit your needs perfectly, from my perspective/experience.
I suppose the Danelectro Fabtone is another way you could go, I've owned one of those. Not very configurable, especially not compared to the Tweak Fuzz, but throwing an EQ pedal after it really gave me a lot of tonal options, and it definitely does have a rather "vintage" sound to it. I think the top end was a little trebly, so you'll probably want to play with your amp EQ or follow it up with an EQ pedal.
Danelectro has the "Fish n Chips", a very inexpensive EQ pedal. It is a little hissier than the Boss GE-7 or MXR 10-band, but if you're talking vintage, that's probably not such a big deal... and just like the other two, bigger cuts/boosts = more noise, so keep it conservative and its not really that bad imho.
The Big Muff tone stack is so very specific, it really does narrow your options a fair bit in terms of versatility, I completely agree with you there. Normally putting an EQ after a fuzz, overdrive, or distortion pedal is one of the best ways to get a wide variety of different tones, but on the Big Muff that mid cut in the tone stack is sooo specific and so noticeable....
I've heard the Zfex Fuzz Factory is a great pedal, but I do believe its well over 100$.
