now..even if I turn the distortion of the amp head off, can I use the gain and equalizer of the head while using a distortion stomp box with it?

Yes you can.
However, the sound gets pretty messy. Depending on the quality of your pedal, you may have some pretty sweet sound from it. If you overdrive your amp, or use distortion settings in your amp along with your pedal it sounds cheap to anyone who knows sound.
So, are you just having fun playing at home along with your favorite CD, are playing along with some 14 year olds, pour on all the distortion you can and let er rip. No one will be able to tell if you're playing real chords or not!!! If you want to go somewhere with your music, listen to the types of distortion used by your favourite bands and try to mix your sounds to match them. Practice their rifts, be technical about it and enjoy yourself.
