Why would overdrive slip and drive is fine?

Question:

I'm looking at a car and was told that while in overdrive it slips but in drive it's fine. I know the difference between both but what's the real problem with the transmission? I want to buy this car and that's the only problem with it.

What I want to know is that would the transmission need to be completely rebuilt or can I buy gears for it to be replaced? I don't even know why it'd slip in overdrive and not in drive.
It's an automatic transmission if that matters.

The most important part of your question is should you purchase a vehicle with this problem? I would recomend not.
the cost of repairs are too high: Rebuilds are labor intensive and the cost of a factory rebuilds are just as expensive the warranty is just better.
Unless this is a special vehicle that you just have to have I would not purchase.
