order of pedals and the how they sound?

Question:

I have a pedal board hooked up ti my fender twin re-verb playing through an eric clapton signature stratocaster. The order of my pedal-board is

Stratocaster -> Boss TU-2 Tuner -> Cry Baby Wah-Wah Pedal -> Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer -> Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal -> Boss CH-1 Super Chorus -> MXR Micro Amp Boost Pedal -> Boss DD-7 Digital Delay -> Fender Twin Re-verb. I am thinking of getting a different distortion to replace the DS-1 as well. Anyways I am wondering if I am sacrificing any sound with this rig. My tube screamer doesn't have enough distortion compared to my buddy's when he plays live with a deluxe re-verb and a tube screamer. Is there a better order or is it because I'm not playing loud enough to break up the amp. Would that give me more distortion? I have never played live with this amp.

Answer:

Hi! In looking at your rig, several thoughts come to mind. First, the Boss Tuner should not be directly in the signal path, as it will definitely suck some of your tone. Next, the MXR Boost pedal is not really necessary coupled with the existing gain from your distortion pedals, and may be compressing your output too much. If you feel you have to use it, try placing it at the very end of the effects chain. In regards to your Ibanez Tube Screamer, be aware that all TS-9s are not created equal! The current models use different chips than the earlier models, plus modifications are available to give the pedal a completely different character. I had mine reworked by Chad Matthews ( http://www.cmatmods.com/mods.html#ts ), and it gave the resulting tone much more focus with less of a midrange bump. Lastly, the newer Fender Twin-Reverbs are very bright amplifiers, and do not break up under load like the earlier models. Also, the input jacks have different filtering, producing a “darker” versus “brighter” sound. Try plugging into each of the inputs, to see if you like the effect better in one versus the other. To get better tone control, I had my Twin-Reverb modified by Dan Torres (http://www.torresengineering.com/fenabovkit1.html ), and the difference was truly amazing! I am not suggesting that you make any of these modifications, only citing them as examples to show that even similar equipment is not going to process the signal in the same way. Hope some of this helps. Best regards, Dana
