Question:
Ive read about people having gain knobs on their amps and i was wondering if it is possible to raise the gain of it even if you dont have a gain knob. i have a metal muff dist pedal with volume, treble, bass, mid, top boost, and distortion knobs. So is it possible to still increase gain and lows and all that stuff?
what settings would i set my metal muff distortion pedal to to get good gain.
Answer:
If you have a valve amp (tip: you proabably have a valve amp if it takes a minute for your amp to "warm up" and start making noise) you can turn it up really loudly to produce natural distortion - this is how it was done in the 60s. Mind you, your family and neighbours will hate you for that. My advice? 1) Buy a new distortion unit 2) upgrade to an amp with a gain control and an overdrive channel (Modeling amps are great for this - try a Vox Valvetronics or the more popular, but in my opinion worse, Line6 spider - these amps also have built in effects and are designed to sound like other amps) or 3) learn to live with the ammount of filth you already have. And theres a lot on the metal muff pedal! Also, you should know that guitars with "Humbucking" pickups will produce a thicker tone with a alittle more gain, which seems to be the sound your looking for. EMG pickups are famed for producing these thick, saturated tones.
Note that I write this under the assumption that you are quite new to guitar. I figured that if you didn't know about gain on amps you probably have not been around amps for too long. So if it saunds like Im talking down to you when your really a pro guitarist then I apologise.
