Is there a certain way Guitar Effect pedals should be hooked up?
Question:
I have a distortion, echo, flange, chorus, overdrive, 7-band eq., and Wah Wah pedals and i was wondering is there a certain order that i should hook them up? If the type of music matters than i play (learning to play actually) more Heavy Metal/goth/rock. any personal prefrences would be appreciated so i can experiment with them and see which one best suits me, thanks
i have a Digitech DF-7 distortion Factory Pedal, the chorus, flange, echo, and eq are Danelectro, and the wah wah is a Vox, the guitars are a Les Paul standard, les paul special II, Fender Strat

Personally, I would put them 1) distortion, 2) overdrive, 3) EQ, 4) flange, 5) chorus and then place the Wah where it sounds best (but usually at the start or end of the chain). The reasons. Distortion is first so that you're not trying to distort effects (can sound bad). So, distort only the clean sound from the guitar. Overdrive, could be before or after distortion (depending on sound you're trying to achieve). Although, an overdrive might be overkill depending on the type of distortion. EQ to equalize the sound going into the effects. Next, flange and chorus because you want these after the distortion and overdrive. Since a Wah alters the overall sound, you may need to determine the best placement of the Wah Pedal. It might work best before the distortion to get the most effective Wah sound, but it may also work just as well at the end. You might also want to consider placing an additional EQ at the end for final equalization.
I should mention, the above is just a guide. Try things and experiment. Only you can find the sound that works for you. Every guitarist should strive to find a unique tone that works for them. Something that's identifiable, yet unique. So, only through experimentation can you find a sound that works for you.
I should also mention that there are Rack Mount effects that allow you to do all of this (and more) in one single unit rather than having to chain pedals together. For example, there's the Boss GT-Pro that will do this (for the price of about 6 Effects Pedals). You might also be able to find a Digitech 2120 on Ebay as well. Either of these rack effects units work very well and allow you to string all of the effects you own together (and more) in a chain internally to get the sound you want without tons of pedals. Of course, all-in-one effects units require a bit of programming skill where effects pedals just require cables and tuning a few buttons.
