Dimarzio Evo Vs Evolution 2 Vs Breed For Ibanez Rg?
Question:
Hi
Im looking to buy a new bridge pickup for my Ibanez rg2550z
Ive been looking at a few and like the evo And Evo 2 The most
I play mostly shred, Metal, HEavy metal, Steve vai, Satriani, Paul gilbert And also some Ozzy But im looking for a pickup that will really stand out But im not sure if the evo will be too trebely?
What is the main difference between them?
Btw I play through a delay, Zw od, And into a jcm 800 But i might be getting a satchurator distortion or jemini...
So witch pickup do you recomend?
Answer:
If you want pickups that stand out, do not get EMGs. It will smother any individuality your guitar may have will make it sound like most any other guitar with EMGs on. They are very hot, true, and they sound decent, true, but they have a very compressed feel to them. That may be great for metal and okay for most styles, but if you want something with feeling then you want a pickup that still retains your picking dynamics... ie, a passive pickup.
Off the top of my head, if you're playing an Ibanez RG, I think those are mostly made from basswood or some such, right? If that's the case, basswood is a pretty "trebly" wood already (basswood has little bass... it's awesome...) so you would in general want a pickup that's has decent bass response to make up for it.
Remember, even if you get a pickup with a little too much treble, you *can* control it.... you have a tone knob, and you can always open up the guitar and put a different cap in there for more or less top end roll off. So too much treble isn't great, but it's correctable. Bass can even be adjusted to a certain extent... if there's too much bass, then lower the bass-side of the pickup... in other words, the side of the pickup underneath the 6th string, so that its sloping down from the treble side. This lowers your bass response, and its incredibly easy to do.
Actually the one thing you can't really fix is the mids... so you want to be careful and select a pickup that has an appropriate mid response for your guitar and your style of playing.
I have an LTD EC-50 and EC-100QM that are both made from basswood... my Jackson Dinky might even be made from basswood, come to think of it. None of them have chunk in the bass, stock pickups or not, but they all have lots of treble and a decent amount of mids. This is great for me, because I like being able to go from rock to bluesy stuff to jazz, from chunk n grunt to sweet shimmery junk.
Okay, so right now I've taken apart the EC-100QM for overhaul, so my EC-50 has a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge. It is pretty middy, so I tend to have a "rounder" sound that works well in general, but I'm almost positive it wouldn't be hot enough for you.
From Seymour Duncan I would suggest the Duncan Custom or the Dimebucker, since those are the ones I'm looking at upgrading to. They're both pretty hot and have good clean tones as well as distorted. Invaders are a little too hot to give clean cleans, but if you use your neck pickup for that, then they do have a lot of bass response to them. I don't think I would pick them for shredding, though.
Okay, as far as DiMarzio goes.... I remember hearing clips of the Evo, and I liked the sound. A lot of DiMarzio pickups seem to be rock oriented, and if you like the sound they give and can match the right pickup to your guitar, then you've got it made.
As far as a neck pickup, I've read a lot of good reviews about the PAF Joe... people were saying that it gives you that "virtuoso", slightly-compressed, lots of sustain sound. I would definitely recommend that one to you for a neck pup.
... Okay, I've just done a load of research, and suggest that the Breed, Evolution 2, and D Sonic are all reasonable choices for you (and me, if I ever went DiMarzio). If you go to the other link below you'll find a website that has loads of gear reviews. It's a good thing to check. I think a couple of the people who reviewed even had your guitar model. Check it out!
And good luck!

Vox Joe Satriani Satchurator Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal Red Metallic $113.09 Drawing on Joe Satrianis knowledge accumulated from decades of groundbreaking performances, both live and in the studio, VOX unveils a breakthrough in guitar tone in The Satchurator distortion pedal. Designed to Satrianis exact specification, the Satchurator produces Satrianis signature tone and adds features and improvements never before combined in a distortion pedal. After almost a year of painstaking experimentation and road testing, Satriani and the VOX R&D team discovered the secrets to capturing the ultimate distortion tone in a modern-day effects pedal. The Vox Satchurator is capable of very high gain levels, but operates more quietly and musically than many other modern distortion pedals. It also preserves the tone and pick attack regardless of style, while providing distortions from subtly distorted blues tones through classic rock and shred."The Satchurator is the most musical, most dynamic, multi-function distortion pedal I've ever played through" says Satriani. "This little red box is a monster tone generator. Following my specifications without compromise, and adding design innovations I never thought possible, the VOX team has delivered exactly what I need for the stage and studioa distortion pedal that responds to my touch, and produces a big, natural, harmonically rich tone compatible with any guitar/pedal/amp configuration."Analog distortion pedal designed under the complete supervision of Joe SatrianiControls for Gain, Tone and Volume'More' gain boost switch enables two footswitchable distortion sounds in one pedal. This gain boost is dramatic when gain knob is set low, and is a subtle solo boost when gain knob is set to maximum.'Pad' switch pads down input to allow for high gain pedals (such as modern wahs) placed before Satchurator. Up is pad 'ON'. Down is pad 'OFF' for full Satchurator effect.High gain, low noise design provides vintage to modern distortion soundsDynamic circuit is highly responsive to rolling off the guitar's volume and preserves the guitar's high end when the volume is rolled off.Cream chicken-head knobs for precise positioning and high visibility on dark stages |
