How to mic up vocals on top of live band?
Question:
tommorrow evening ive got a big band playing live with a vocalist
last year it was absolutely awful and muddy sounding, let me explain
its a concert in a very reverby hall, with a full big band playing and a vocalist singing in front of them. whats the best way to mic up the vocalist so they sound crisp and sharp and don't pick up the band in the background? i have access to eq facilities and am using a shure sm58 with 2 speakers on either side
any help much appreciated!
Answer:
Make sure you have some kind of foam pop filter to cover the front of the mic, even if it's handheld. (Yes, the SM58 has one built in, but trust me it's not good enough for this.) If the hall has natural reverb, then forget adding any to the vocals, maybe just a little delay but the hall itself is part of your problem. Roll off everything below 60hz, boost 2k and 6-8k, if you can. (But only a little!) The best way to not pick up the band in the vocalists mic is to keep them out front as far away from the band as possible/practical, and use in-ear monitors instead of wedges, if you can.
